Trademarks Licensing

Frequently Asked Questions

Why have a licensing program?
Trademark licensing creates a cooperative working relationship between the University, manufacturers, and retailers. This assures that all merchandise bearing University of North Florida trademarks promotes and protects the image of the University, its symbols, and satisfies consumers wanting quality UNF licensed merchandise.

Where do licensing revenues go?
Licensed manufacturers pay the University a royalty on all products sold for the use of the Federally and State registered marks. These revenues are earmarked to help underwrite the cost of programs and services.

What qualifies as a trademark?
Any mark, logo, symbol, nickname, letter(s), word, or derivative that can be associated with the University of North Florida and can be distinguished from those of other institutions or entities qualifies as a trademark.

Who will need a license?
Only manufacturers producing items or arts and crafts persons producing items incorporating the University marks must be licensed. The approval/disapproval of products is the responsibility of the Office of University Trademark Licensing at UNF. Product approval assures the public that the products are of high quality, in good taste for both the University and its symbols, the marks are correctly reproduced, and bear the proper registration. Liabilities for dangerous or hazardous products are also determined during the approval/disapproval process to protect the University.
